Loyola announced a new school at the university’s health sciences campus in Maywood, officials said.

Students can start taking classes at the School of Health Sciences and Public Health (SHSPH) during the 2019-20 school year, according to an email sent to the Loyola community from Loyola President Jo Ann Rooney and acting provost Margaret Callahan. Kathy Bobay, a professor in the Niehoff School of Nursing, will serve as interim dean.

The SHSPH is part of the university’s Plan 2020 initiative, which is focused on promoting student diversity and social justice, according to the email.

“In this new school, innovative, high-quality programs link in synergy to expand our students’ educational options and provide a host of new opportunities for direct service to the community in Maywood, Illinois, and across the Chicago area,” the email stated.

The school will offer programs in public health, health systems management, exercise science and dietetics — all of which are currently offered in the Niehoff School of Nursing — along with more unspecified degrees, according to the email.

“We are grateful to Loyola’s Board of Trustees and its leadership for their strategic thought partnership and support for this historic new initiative,” the email stated. “We are indebted to the program directors, faculty, students, and staff who have contributed research, creativity, and months of work to thoughtfully build and shape the formation of the School of Health Sciences and Public Health.”

In a statement to The Phoenix, Callahan said the program is meant to accommodate an evolving society.

“This is an exciting initiative that will help foster innovative integrated health care delivery as society’s needs grow,” the statement said. “We look forward to sharing more details with the community during the year as we plan and implement during the 2018-19 academic year, and to celebrating with all Loyolans the opening in 2019.”

Rooney, Callahan and Bobay didn’t respond to The Phoenix’s request for comment at the time of publication.
