After a stint in the NBA Summer League, former Loyola men’s basketball player Marques Townes is set to play professionally in Europe this season.

Townes signed a contract with Club Baloncesto Murcia (UCAM Murcia) in Spain, the club announced Tuesday morning. Details of the deal weren’t immediately released. UCAM Murcia is the same team fellow Rambler Milton Doyle played for last season.

UCAM Murcia plays in the Liga ACB — the top basketball league in Spain — and the Champions League, a tournament organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). They went 12-22 in Liga ACB play last year and 14-2 in Champions League action.

Townes took to Twitter to react to the announcement.

“Beyond Blessed to sign my first contract in one of the best Professional Leagues in the World #ACB @ACBCOM!!” Townes tweeted. “@UCAMMurcia Gracias por la oportunidad  #QuererEsPoder See you soon Murcia!!”

Townes, 23, is the second former Rambler to sign with a professional team this offseason. Teammate Clayton Custer signed with WKS Śląsk Wrocław in Poland July 22. Custer and Townes were the only two men’s basketball players to graduate in 2019.

After transferring from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2016, Townes played an integral role in the Ramblers’ run to the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2018 — hitting the game-winning shot to defeat University of Nevada in the Sweet Sixteen. In 2019, the Edison, New Jersey native was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year after averaging 15.3 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game and 3.6 assists per game.

After the season, Townes signed with the Chicago Bulls to play in the NBA Summer League. Townes only appeared in one game during the five-game tournament, tallying two points, two rebounds and an assist. He also worked out for the Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks during the offseason, The Phoenix reported.

Townes and UCAM Murcia didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
