In celebration of the 100th season of Loyola men’s basketball, Loyola athletics unveiled the Loyola All-Century Team Jan. 29. The team was chosen via fan vote and a committee vote and will be recognized at halftime of Loyola’s home game against Missouri State University Feb. 3.
The 1963 national championship team consisting of Jerry Harkness, John Egan, Vic Rouse, Les Hunter and Ron Miller were selected as part of the 25-player team. Head coach George Ireland — who led Loyola to the only NCAA title — was the lone coach selected.
Also selected was center LaRue Martin, who played at Loyola from 1969-72. Martin left after his junior year to enter the NBA Draft, in which the Portland Trail Blazers selected him No. 1 overall. Martin averaged 18.2 ppg and 15.9 rpg at Loyola, but only averaged 5.3 ppg and 4.6 rpg in four seasons with Portland.
Also on the team is guard Milton Doyle. Doyle graduated Loyola in 2017 and is currently a two-way player with the Brooklyn Nets, meaning he can see time in the NBA while also gaining experience with the Nets’ G-League affiliate, the Long Island Nets. After transferring from the University of Kansas, Doyle averaged 13.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg and 3.8 apg and became the first player in Loyola history to earn First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 2017. In his first season with Long Island this year, Doyle is averaging 22.3 ppg and has played six games with Brooklyn.
Other notable selections include Alfredrick Hughes, who played at Loyola from 1981-85 and is Loyola’s all-time leading scorer; Andre Moore, who played from 1984-87 and was the last Rambler to play in an NBA game before Doyle; and Blake Schilb, who played from 2003-07 and currently plays professionally in Europe.
