As record-setting cold weather makes its way to the Chicago area this week, Loyola’s administration has canceled classes Tuesday evening through Thursday morning.

In a joint email sent Monday night, interim provost Margaret Callahan and senior vice president for administrative services Thomas Kelly announced classes will be canceled at all three of Loyola’s campuses — the Lake Shore Campus, Water Tower Campus and Health Sciences Campus — from Tuesday at 5 p.m. through Thursday at noon. Loyola’s intercampus shuttle bus will also stop running during that span, according to the email.

The Loyola men’s basketball game against University of Northern Iowa, which is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m., will still be played at Gentile Arena. Residence halls, the Damen Student Center, Halas Recreation Center and Norville Center for Intercollegiate Athletics will also remain open.

This marks the first time Loyola has canceled classes since Feb. 2011, when a blizzard hit the Chicago area, dropping 21.2 inches of snow and shutting down Lake Shore Drive. The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting temperatures to reach -9°F with wind chills up to -55°F this week. These conditions could cause frostbite in as little as five minutes, according to the NWS.
